Chapter 1173 1,172: Compensation Time Arrives, Zelel Appears Suddenly!
Tohru flicked her tail and immediately bounced over, rubbing her head against his arm. Her dragon tail curled around his forearm, and her eyes shone brightly.
"Compensation! I want Rei Ao to hold me! And I want to eat tail meat together too!"
Emilia set the teacup down on the coffee table. Her fingers twisted nervously in her skirt as Futaba took her hand and led her over. The pink at the tips of her ears still hadn't faded.
"I… I'll do whatever Rei Ao wants."
Futaba pushed up her glasses, set her tablet on the coffee table, and walked over as well. A faint mist had formed over her lenses.
"Perfect timing. I've got a few new ideas I want to talk over with Rei Ao too."
Illya held Sora's hand as they skipped along behind them, their matching rabbit pajamas swaying with each step, their footsteps light and cheerful.
"We want to be with Rei Ao too!"
The bedroom door clicked softly shut, sealing off the fading daylight outside.
Rei Ao set Mai down.
Tohru immediately threw herself onto the edge of the bed, her tail swishing back and forth.
She leaned over the mattress with her head resting on his leg, looking utterly content.
Rei Ao ruffled her hair, his fingers sliding gently down through the ends.
Tohru instantly beamed, her tail wagging even harder as she leaned closer and left a light kiss on his face.
Emilia sat at the edge of the bed, lightly pinching the bedsheet between her fingers.
"In the world you went to this time… did you run into any danger?"
"Hancock said in the group chat that the pirate world has a lot of powerful people, and all kinds of ability users."
In her own world, she had seen too many tragedies caused by overwhelming differences in strength.
So every time Rei Ao traveled to another world, she worried constantly.
She thought about it every day, again and again.
Rei Ao reached out and took her hand, his fingertips brushing across the cool back of it.
"Don't worry. That world is still pretty weak. No one there could hurt me."
"Besides, you all know my strength already, don't you?"
"This time, I also gave Hancock a hand while I was there. No one will dare trouble her again."
Mai leaned against his side, her fingertips tracing lightly across his chest, one brow slightly raised.
"Oh? No wonder you stayed there so long. I was starting to think you got trapped in the Pirate Empress's warm embrace and couldn't bear to come back."
There was a faint note of jealousy in her voice.
Rei Ao lowered his head and kissed the top of her hair, pulling her a little closer into his arms.
"No matter how gentle someone else's embrace is, it can't compare to ours—especially not yours, Mai."
He pulled a velvet box from his pocket and opened it. Inside was a pink diamond necklace, exquisitely cut, glinting with tiny shards of light even in the dim room.
"This is from the pirate world. I thought it would suit you perfectly, so I brought it back."
The tips of Mai's ears immediately turned red. She reached out to take the necklace, her fingers brushing over the cool diamond, though her tone stayed stubbornly proud.
"You really do know how to say the right things. You think one necklace is enough to make me forgive you?"
"The time you owe me won't be made up that easily."
That was what she said, but she still turned around and swept her long hair up, revealing her slender neck so he could put it on for her.
Rei Ao took the necklace and fastened it around her neck, his fingertips brushing lightly over her collarbone.
The pink diamond rested against her skin, making her complexion look even fairer, as if her whole presence had brightened.
"It looks beautiful."
His voice was low, touched with a faint huskiness as it sounded beside her ear.
"Our Mai looks beautiful in anything."
Mai's cheeks flushed even deeper.
She turned back and gave him a little push, but couldn't move him at all. Instead, he simply pulled her back into his arms.
With a mischievous smile, Rei Ao said, "Next, I'm going to make it up to you properly. And the rest of you too."
…
Outside the window, the daylight slowly shifted from bright golden-orange to a deep dusky blue, before finally sinking into full night.
Only the small bedside lamp remained, glowing with a warm yellow light.
Tohru lay curled up in his arms, her tail wrapped around his waist.
She yawned, rubbing her head against his chest, too sleepy to even keep her eyes open.
"Rei Ao… I'm sleepy."
"Then go to sleep."
Rei Ao rubbed her head and pulled the blanket over her.
Emilia was tucked in against his side, her breathing soft and even. She had already fallen asleep.
Her silver hair was scattered across the pillow, and a faint smile still rested at the corner of her lips.
Futaba's breathing was steady too. She was clearly exhausted.
Illya and Sora were snuggled together, clutching a stuffed toy and sleeping soundly. Their faces were rosy, and every now and then one of them murmured something in a dream.
Mai rested against his chest, her fingertips lightly brushing over him, one brow slightly raised. Her voice was kept low, careful not to wake the others.
"Happy now?"
Her fingers moved over the diamond necklace at her throat.
"Not yet. The one who needs comforting most still hasn't been fully comforted."
When he finished speaking, he left the rest unsaid and answered her with a quiet kiss instead.
The warm lamplight in the bedroom swayed softly, and the whole room seemed steeped in tenderness.
…
Late at night, the bedroom was silent.
The curtains were drawn tight.
Only the bedside lamp cast a faint glow.
The girls were all sleeping soundly, their breathing even and calm.
Then, right in the center of the room, space suddenly shimmered with a holy white radiance.
The light grew brighter and brighter, carrying the pure aura unique to the heavens.
Zelel's figure appeared within the glow.
She held a holy staff in her hand, her brows knit tightly together, the divine light around her carrying a stern, unyielding presence.
She was Heaven's top honor student.
She had always been responsible for monitoring and maintaining order, and even after coming to the human world, she had never let go of that habit.
Just moments ago, she had received an extremely clear distress signal.
Without a second thought, she followed the signal straight here.
"Who was it that sent out a distress signal here?"
Her words caught in her throat the very next second, and not another syllable came out.
Her gaze swept across the entire bedroom, and she finally understood the scene before her.
On the large soft bed, several figures lay sprawled in every direction.
And the man in the center, surrounded by all of them—Rei Ao—was staring back at her with an unmistakably strange expression.
A particular atmosphere lingered in the air.
Even for an angel like her, someone who had spent most of her life in Heaven and knew little of worldly matters, it was more than enough to understand what kind of scene she had stumbled into.
Color flooded her cheeks at a speed visible to the naked eye, spreading from her ears all the way down her neck.
The hand gripping her holy staff trembled, and even the divine light around her wavered, nearly scattering.
Her mind went completely blank.
Everything she had prepared to say, every move she had planned in case she was dealing with a demon, vanished cleanly from her head.
All that remained was the scene in front of her, replaying over and over in her mind.
