Chapter 243: The Ride Back Home!
Chapter 243: The Ride Back Home!
Clementine searched high and low but Anderson was nowhere to be found. She inquired around, asking if anyone had seen someone leave the area, but those who kindly engaged in conversation shook their heads, denying any knowledge of his whereabouts.
Their responses piqued Clementine’s curiosity. Could there be another secret exit within the building?
It wouldn’t be surprising, considering the military often installed emergency exits for security purposes. If no one had seen Anderson leave through the main door, then there seemed to be no other plausible explanation.
Hours later, Clementine returned to her post, wide awake. She observed that most people around were sound asleep, with the lights dimmed to conserve energy, a standard practice in the facility. A faint creak from one of the doors caught her attention before the sound of footsteps echoed through the quiet space.
With her acute hearing, Clementine didn’t miss a beat and recognized the distinct gait of Anderson, despite his injured state. His distinctive footsteps revealed his identity to someone as observant as Clementine. Anderson made his way back to his bed, but Clementine remained vigilant, confirming her suspicions that something was amiss with him.
Aware that there might be more secrets hidden within the walls of the facility, Clementine knew she had to tread carefully and be prepared to act ruthlessly in the face of any potential threats.
Despite the original plan to leave Samantha behind, Clementine felt a strong sense of responsibility towards her safety. She couldn’t bear the thought of abandoning Samantha without ensuring the place was secure for her stay.
Intuition told Clementine that Anderson was a cause for concern, displaying numerous red flags that hinted at imminent danger.
She understood that intervention might be necessary sooner rather than later to protect Samantha and uncover the hidden truths lurking within the facility.

It was deep into the night, yet they continued their journey on the road. Jason lay fast asleep in the backseat, while Dimitris harbored suspicions about him. He questioned whether he had imagined what he had seen, but he dismissed the notion, knowing it couldn’t be a mere figment of his imagination.
Glenn, perceptive as ever, sensed Dimitris’ unease. He recognized Dimitris as a man who wouldn’t easily be rattled, indicating that Jason must have done something to trigger his suspicions. Glenn decided not to blindly support Jason as he had done with Franklin in the past. Something felt off, a palpable tension lingering in the air, prompting Glenn to reflect on the situation.
Jason had inexplicably survived perilous circumstances, raising doubts about his true identity. Unbeknownst to Glenn, the individuals who had previously harmed Jason were evolved zombies, adding a layer of complexity to the unfolding events.
"Keep your eyes on the road," Glenn reminded Dimitris, drawing his attention back to the task at hand. Concerned, Glenn inquired about Dimitris’ well-being, to which Dimitris nodded in reassurance. Though unusual for him, Dimitris refocused on driving, leaving Glenn uncertain about how to react but relieved that they were all safe.
Having successfully completed the mission that each of them was initially tasked to undertake alone, the remainder of the car ride transpired in silence, shrouding Jason’s mysterious dreams in an air of intrigue.

In a surreal setting, Jason found himself amidst a desolate field strewn with lifeless bodies. Uncertain of his surroundings, the vividness of the scene left him questioning if this was indeed a dream. The corpses lay motionless, yet the warmth of their skin indicated recent passing.
Perplexed by the eerie sight, Jason cautiously reached out to one of the bodies, only to recoil as it unexpectedly twitched. Alert and wary, Jason braced himself for the unknown danger looming ahead. The zombie’s glowing purple eyes fixated on him, hinting at a newfound form of perception.
Despite encountering zombies in the past, this encounter felt different—each undead figure rising from the ground and fixating its gaze on Jason. Uttering fragmented words, they collectively identified him as a human, instilling a sense of foreboding as unseen hands seemed to immobilize Jason in place.
They slowly dragged him beneath the earth, trapping him despite his struggles. The advancing zombies added their weight, sending a shiver of fear down Jason’s spine. He was paralyzed, terror gripping him as their teeth sank into his flesh, sending waves of pain coursing through his veins. Just as the agony peaked, Jason jolted awake, gasping for breath as the morning sun cast its light.
Breathing heavily, Jason scanned his surroundings. To his relief, Glenn now occupied the driver’s seat with Dimitris asleep beside him. However, a gruesome sight awaited him—Carl, with gouged-out eyes, yet inexplicably alive. Shocked, Jason noticed his own bloodied hands, realizing he had been consuming his own insides.
This was frightening because the moment the young man looked down at his torso, he saw that his won stomach was ripped open as well except there was a baby clawing its way out of him.
The pain felt so real, Jason was feeling everything as if it was happening at that moment.
Shaken by the macabre vision, Jason leaped up, startling the others awake. Glenn’s alarmed cry pierced the air, prompting Jason to explain it away as a mere bad dream. Yet, as he met Dimitris’ suspicious gaze, he sensed the growing tension in the air.
Dimitris was a cautious man that could pick up on things that others couldn’t, Jason hated to admit it but he knew that this might prove to be a problem.
Despite knowing Dimitris’ astuteness, Jason remained steadfast in his belief that Dimitris would never jeopardize the community’s safety. Jason understood that his actions spoke louder than his identity; it was his principles that truly mattered in the face of escalating uncertainty.
Their priority was getting home in one piece, there was no telling what fate awaited humanity but they realized that the problems they were having within the community was the least of their problems with the existence of this new threat but they didn’t know it was them that would bring the threat right back to their home.
