Chapter 258: Humanity Gained, Humanity Lost
Chapter 258: Humanity Gained, Humanity Lost
Jason found it hard to believe what he was told but he knew that this was a possibility because it all added up; if this was the case, why didn’t Allison just come clean?
He wouldn’t have known what was going on if Bella didn’t reveal what she had discovered.
But if Mariam was the one responsible for everything that had occurred then he had more things to worry about.
Jason realized that this community was just as deceptive as any other because what is a woman who is willing to sacrifice her husband for the sake of leadership?
There were stories about how she didn’t agree with her husband’s method and this was why her lover was surprised when he heard that his wife had allowed new people to enter the community.
Now it made sense, she allowed them in because of Allison not because of what Carl had told her.
This was a cover, an act as this wasn’t the first time her son was recommending someone.
"I know you don’t believe me but I also know you’re smart enough to at least give this some thought... The Specters do not wish to harm anyone in the community, they simply wish to remove Mariam from power because she has threatened their supplies," Allison revealed but Jason knew he couldn’t allow this to happen.
Mariam might have killed her husband and thrown the community into chaos but she was needed for stability.
If she was removed or killed, it would be like removing a dictator and letting the people rip themselves apart and there was no telling that whoever they put as her replacement wouldn’t be a dummy.
The Specters might not be taking over the community directly but they were using an indirect method that would make them the de facto rulers of the area.
It was a clever plan if you thought about it but Jason knew he couldn’t allow this to happen.
"That is all I wanted to tell you, I will be leaving now..." Allison said but Jason stood in her way.
"What are you doing?" Allison asked.
"I’m sorry but I cannot let you leave," Jason warned sternly but Allison almost laughed at how ridiculous this was.
"You can’t stop me, Jason. Now step aside or I will have to go through you with force," Allison threatened him.
She was right, she was stronger than Jason considering she was a Specter, there was no way that Jason would be a match for her.
At least, that would have applied if she was fighting the version of Jason that existed six months ago.
Allison removed her gun and pointed it right at Jason but the man didn’t flinch.
"You think I won’t pull the trigger?" Allison questioned with a smug expression, her mask was slowly slipping.
"Pull the trigger," Jason dared her, he was either calling her bluff or he was testing her resolve.
"... But you better kill me when you do because I wouldn’t make the same mistake," Jason warned in a blood-curdling tone.
Allison hesitated because the look in his eyes had changed, she didn’t know what Jason had turned into but this wasn’t the man she knew months ago.
Allison realized that he might prove to be a problem and this was when an idea came to her head.
She could kill Jason and pin it on Bella, no one knew she had left the community so she could manipulate the timeframe for her disappearance to correlate with the death of Jason.
She didn’t want to do it but she had to put her mission first.
"I really wish I met you before the world fell... Maybe my life would have been different," Allison said, the smile on her face showing that this wasn’t an easy decision.
"... Maybe I wouldn’t have turned out to be such a piece of shut but it is a pity someone else saved me. Now I owe him my life," Allison said but Jason didn’t say a word.
Allison was surprised that she couldn’t do it, her fingers stiffened.
"You aren’t the monster you paint yourself to be. You might have betrayed me but do not betray your humanity," Jason spoke.
He placed his hand on hers and gradually lowered the gun, he knew that Allison wouldn’t be able to because despite never saying it, Jason knew that Allison had feelings for him.
Allison didn’t resist and the gun was lowered.
"Why...?" She asked, she couldn’t comprehend how one person could be so forgiving.
There was no reason for this to happen and Jason had every right to report to Mariam what she was planning.
"I don’t believe you’re evil, I know your heart is in the right place. You chose to betray me for the sake of a greater good..." Jason said and Allison didn’t realize when tears streamed down her cheeks.
"You’re something else," Allison muttered to which Jason chuckled faintly, he was glad he could talk her out of it because there was no telling what would have happened if she pulled the trigger.
"Say Allison..." Jason restarted the conversation, and Allison’s body language was relaxed.
"Yeah, Jason?" Allison responded, wiping the tears from her face.
"You say you were working for the Specters when this happened so that means you had a hand in all the events that occurred?" Jason asked, without thinking, Allison nodded to affirm this.
"I did but I didn’t know it would get to this stage, it wasn’t meant to claim so many lives," Allison noted the flaw in her plan.
"Hahaha! I see. I guess these things cannot be helped," Jason said and she heaved a sigh of relief.
"I’m glad you understan-!" Allison realized she couldn’t speak anymore but how could she when Jason had ripped open her lungs with his bare hand?
"I can forgive you for fucking me over but I cannot forgive you for putting those I love in danger..." Jason’s eyes were cold as he watched Allison hold her neck, as she struggled for air.
"I meant it when I said I didn’t think you were evil, there is no longer any right or wrong. Right is whatever protects my family and right now, you’re what’s wrong..." Jason muttered.
Allison’s brow furrowed as she raised the gun to Jason, she pulled the trigger but the gun was jammed.
Jason knew the gun was jammed thanks to Chronos, even guns needed maintenance or these things were bound to happen.
Allison collapsed to the ground in a pool of her blood with Jason looking over her.
"No more," Jason blurted out.
